About the Author: Peter Young is an innovative thinker, who is fascinated by how people come to understand themselves and their lives through the ‘models of the world’ they develop, the metaphors they use, and the stories they tell themselves to explain what happens.

Peter studied Psychology at the University of Hull, and researched brain function and learning styles at the University of Adelaide. He also studied Drama at the Flinders University of South Australia, and has maintained a life-long interest in film and theatre, improvisation, plot-structure and storytelling.

He has worked as a management trainer, created training videos, and has written explanatory books on NVQs. He first encountered NLP in 1984, trained with John Seymour Associates, and worked for Ian McDermott of International Teaching Seminars. He has written numerous articles for Rapport (the magazine of the UK Association for Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and has given presentations at the ANLP Conferences. Since the mid 1990s, Peter has been rethinking NLP, and his groundbreaking book Understanding NLP: Metaphors and Patterns of Change, published in 2001, is his account of a new model of change.

About the Book: Peter Young takes you through the applications and consequences of this way of thinking, and explains how you can be more effective in getting other people to join with you in realising your vision.

Planning is vital. You are envisioning the world as you would like it. Visions that are rich in detail and well thought through will be compelling for others. Informing others is not about ‘winging it’ or ‘it’ll be all right on the night.’ If you prepare the way for other people, they will accept your vision and want to be part of it. Then change becomes easy.

The most effective way of motivating people is to tell a story. We live in a storytelling culture: think about the obsession with news, gossip, and media personalities; with Hollywood movies, and the latest bestselling books. People are hooked on stories, so why not use stories to get your message across – to help others understand how things will be changing. People who buy into your story, are far more likely to go along with your proposals.

Once you look beneath the surface, you will probably recognise how this works, because you already have a lifetime’s experience of stories that change lives. It’s just that you never noticed the principles before, because with good communication the structure is meant to stay in the background.

So learn how to create a vision that will persuade others, and how to structure your message using metaphors and stories that will motivate your team, your clients, and your customers. By adjusting the way you communicate to others, you will be helping them change their way of understanding what needs to happen. And the result is not only that you have a united team, you also can deal far more effectively with any resistance or conflict you encounter.

Change Manager provides many real-life examples of people who have ‘told their stories’ and brought about significant changes in the world as a result. Now you can become your own success story.
